Coop Sleep Goods The EdenCool+ Adjustable Pillow review | CNN Underscored

Some products have a certain X factor that puts them into a class all on their own. These are Underscored All-Stars, which you can read more about here.

For as long as I can remember (perhaps because I’m from Arizona), I’ve been a person who runs hot, so it makes sense that I’d also be a hot sleeper. I’m someone who has to turn on my AC in winter because my radiator is so hot that I get night sweats. Not only does my bed feel like a sauna at night, but I also move around a lot while I sleep. That’s why I’ve spent years trying to find the Goldilocks of pillows that keeps me cool and is comfortable whether I’m snoozing on my side or stomach. Luckily, it’s been my job for nearly a decade to review all things bedding, and a few years ago, I finally got my hands on an ultra-cooling pillow that won a permanent spot on my bed: Coop Sleep Goods’ Cool+ Adjustable Pillow.

I’ve tried everything from those cheap (and lumpy) Ikea pillows that cost $2 to overpriced pillows that didn’t offer the customization I was looking for. As soon as I opened up this Coop Sleep Goods pillow, my jaw hit the floor. It was physically cool to the touch — and I haven’t looked back since.

The cooling version of the brand's bestselling Original pillow boasts gel-infused memory foam, a heat-wicking liner and cool-touch cover. Most impressively, you can remove or add in filling for the most personalized pillow you've ever had.

I’m not speaking metaphorically when I say this pillow feels like it has a built-in AC. And it doesn’t just feel good, it’s beneficial for your sleep too. According to Carleara Weiss, a professor and sleep scientist with multiple degrees, “Cooling pillows work by lowering the body temperature around the neck and shoulder. Lowering the body temperature is one crucial physiological change for sleep onset (falling asleep),” she says. “Our body temperature needs to drop by 1 to 2 degrees Fahrenheit, which, in turn, helps with natural melatonin production and falling asleep.”

So, how does this pillow work? Its claim to fame is largely the Oomph Cool + Fill, which is a proprietary plus-shaped, cooling gel memory foam and microfiber blend. According to the brand’s website, the fill allows for maximum breathability, which keeps my night sweats at bay. The blend is hypoallergenic, and the pillow has earned GreenGuard Gold and CertiPur-US certifications.

It also features a crisp (washable) outer cover and a cooling gel layer that helped lull me to sleep in comfort.

Aside from its cooling abilities, this pillow gets extra brownie points for being completely customizable, just like the brand’s bestselling Original pillow. Other pillows I’ve tried that claim to be adjustable don’t hold a candle to this one; there’s one in particular that features an expandable zipper, just like an expandable suitcase, but there’s no option to make it flatter. With Coop Sleep Goods’ cooling pillow, the limit truly doesn’t exist when it comes to your customization options. Most importantly, it’s super easy to adjust the filling.

The pillow is already filled upon arrival, and it comes with an extra half-pound bag of the Oomph Cool + Fill, so you can stuff it even more if you prefer a firmer feel — or, if you’ve had yours for years like me, you’ll have spare fill to freshen it up over time. As you can see in the video above, some of my fluff has turned a greenish color, so this was a humbling reminder to swap out my fill. Pro tip: You can even use the extra fill to stuff another pillowcase. So, while the pillow is splurgy at $140 for the queen size, when you factor in the extra fill, you’re essentially getting two pillows for $70 each.

We’ve all been there: Once your favorite pillow starts to wear down, the dreaded lumps begin forming. With this pillow’s smart adjustable design, that’s a problem of the past. You can easily shift around the filling to make sure it’s evenly distributed. And if it’s not? Simply remove or add filling to make it more comfortable.

You’re probably wondering what in the world a Qmax rating is right now. Don’t worry, I was in the same exact boat until I did some research and spoke with an expert about this type of lab test. According to Weiss, “The Qmax score indicates how fast the fabric can transfer heat away from our skin and stay cool when we touch it.”

The Sparknotes version: The higher the score, the cooler it’ll feel. The Qmax scale ranges from 0.1 (warmest) to 0.5 being the coolest. In general, she says to consider fabrics like bamboo and Tencel, which have higher Qmax scores. According to Coop Sleep Goods’ website, this pillow’s inner liner has a Qmax score of 0.34 and the crisp outer cover has a rating of 0.48 — a pretty high score on the Qmax scale.

We chose the crescent-shaped version of EdenCool+ as the best cooling pillow for side sleepers, and my experience with the classic shape was in line with our tests on the crescent. One thing to note: Our testers found the pillow to be even cooler if you slept directly on the washable cover instead of putting a pillowcase on top. I’m all about aesthetic, though, so I use a case and have found that the pillow is still cool enough for me.

If the crescent and classic shapes aren’t suitable for your preferred sleep positions, there’s also a cut-out shape made just for side sleepers who also rotate to their backs.

The best cooling pillows in 2025, tried and tested

We all spend nearly one-third of our lives sleeping (or trying to), so it’s important to invest in products things that’ll make your slumber as restorative as possible. I know $140 may seem steep for a pillow, but when you consider that it can help give you a more restful night’s sleep, making you more energized and ready for the day like it did for me, it’s worth every penny. And if you break it down to cost per use and the extra fill you’ll have on hand, the value is truly off the charts.

If you’re like me and have tried cooling sheets, pajamas, earplugs, sound machines and supplements to help you snooze, trust me when I say the Coop Sleep Goods Cool+ Adjustable Pillow is the biggest game changer of them all. Of course, choosing a pillow is a personal preference and dependent upon many factors like your sleeping position and room and body temperature, but this was the custom-filled golden ticket to unlocking the restful slumber I’d spent years, well, dreaming of.

The following FAQs were answered by myself and Carleara Weiss, a professor and sleep scientist with multiple degrees.

To adjust the pillow, unzip the washable cover and inner case to remove or add as much fill as you’d like for your preferred comfort. You will also receive an extra half-pound of Oopmh Fill with your pillow if you wish to add more or replace filling as needed.

There are a few things to keep in mind, according to Weiss. “Remember your body weight and sleep position when shopping for cooling pillows. When in doubt, pick a medium-firm pillow with multiple layers, including gel, memory foam and PCMs,” she says. “I like the ones with bamboo in their external layers to make them more breathable.” You’ll also want to look for one that’s washable or at least has a washable cover.

“Cooling pillows have at least one layer of gel, water or other liquid that keeps their temperature low to the touch and helps lower body temperature,” says Weiss. She says there are also newer technologies, like phase-changing materials (PCMs), that have a liquid-to-gel form and absorb heat, which helps keep the body temperature lower while sleeping.

Yes, though the degree of cooling may feel different for everyone. As Weiss mentions above, cooling pillows work by lowering the body temperature around the neck and shoulders, which is key to falling asleep. This drop in temperature helps with natural melatonin production, and therefore, results in a more restful sleep.

Weiss says, “Cooling pillows suit hot sleepers — people naturally feel warmer during sleep. They are also helpful for perimenopausal and menopausal women, pregnant women and those living in very warm areas.” She also says that they’re great to use in the summer.
