If your couch has seen better days (wine spills, pet hair, and mystery smudges), don’t panic and start browsing for a new one just yet. Couch covers can work some serious magic, protecting your furniture while giving your living room a mini makeover without major commitment or a hefty price tag.
We tested a bunch of couch covers to find the best ones that hide the evidence of a messy movie night or protect your couch from a not-yet-house-trained pet plus are stylish and come in many colors and patterns.
When shopping, look for fabrics like cotton or polyester, with a little stretch, especially those with added spandex or elastane. If you have children and pets, opt for fabrics that won’t be susceptible to snagging, like polyester, canvas, and velour, as well as something with water-resistant properties.
So whether you’re looking to protect your sofa from everyday life or liven it up a bit, we’ve got you (and your couch) covered.
It’s incredibly stretchy, comfortable, inexpensive, and easy to clean.
Despite being easy to wash, it would be perfect if it were completely water- and stain-proof.
We had long been looking for a couch cover that could fit our oversized couch without a wrestling match and survive an active household with two children and a 50-pound German shepherd/Shiba Inu mix. Well, we found it, and not only is it still going strong three months later, but it’s also getting cozier with every wash.
The ultra-stretchy fabric covers oversized arms and deep seats without feeling like you’re about to tear it. While it does shift a bit after a few movie marathons, it’s easy enough to realign. Plus, it’s very easy to maintain. We wash it frequently, and it has kept its stretch.
It's smooth, breathable, and cozy enough to want to sit on. It’s not fully waterproof but holds up to everyday spills with no shrinkage or color fading. The polyester and spandex material is soft, with a jacquard weave pattern for added texture. It even covers the back of your couch, which is ideal if it isn’t up against a wall.

It has a super soft, flannel-like fabric that is cozy and warm, and it’s durable despite the price.
It shifts frequently, requiring adjustments, and cat hair is challenging to remove.
We love the snuggly feel of this couch cover. We tested it on an Article sofa in a high-traffic household (think: two toddlers and a scratch-happy long-haired cat), and it’s held up admirably through daily use, active movie nights, and the occasional spill.
The fabric feels like flannel: warm and inviting. While not overly thick, it has a nice weight to it.
It doesn’t have a perfect tailored fit and tends to shift around with heavy use, but the elastic is strong, even with frequent adjusting. It washes well, too: Three months later, there is no shrinkage or fading, and it always looks new post-cleaning.
Unfortunately, it’s not water-resistant, and pet hair clings to the textured fabric, which isn’t the easiest to vacuum. At under $30 though, it’s hard to beat for the comfort, quality, and affordability.
Sizes: Chair, oversized chair, loveseat, oversized loveseat, sofa, oversized sofa, four-seater sofa | Material: Polyester, spandex | Care: Machine washable in warm water | Colors: 30
The quilted fabric is durable, can withstand scratching, and won’t collect fur.
It doesn't cover the entire couch.
This couch cover is designed for serious shedding and heavy use. It’s impressively earned rave reviews from a household with two dogs (one the size of a linebacker) and two cats. After three months, it’s become the dog’s favorite seat in the house.
We think pets use the couch more than people do. We don’t blame them; it’s way more plush and cozy than the blankets formerly laid out for them. Our favorite, though, is the fact that this couch cover has kept all the pet hair and paw prints off the actual couch.
With a grippy rubber backing and thick, quilted fabric, this cover handles almost anything. It stays put, even with two dogs spinning round and round to get comfortable, and holds up well to weekly washes.
Yes, the price is on the steeper side (the most expensive on our list), but the fur-fighting power could justify the investment for many pet owners. Plus, the removable bolster adds a nice little lounge pillow your dog didn’t know they needed.
Sizes: Loveseat, sofa, XL sofa | Material: Polyester | Care: Machine-washable in cold water | Colors: 2
The surface is incredibly water resistant, and you can adjust the size to use on other furniture.
The fabric is slippery so it shifts often, especially if kids or pets are active on the couch.
If you're juggling snack-happy toddlers, curious pets, or just prone to spills and accidents, this inexpensive, easy-to-wash cover is your new best friend. This one is more of a water-resistant blanket than a fitted couch cover, so it’s easier to use.
While it doesn't cover the back of the sofa, it keeps the seats clean, dry, and protected. It’s proven its worth after months of use in a home with two kids and two cats, having saved our couch from spills more than once.
It wins points for its quick spill defense—water beads up and can be wiped away easily—and for being incredibly versatile. We love that it’s reversible and comes in a ton of colors and sizes. It fits almost any couch or loveseat with a little creative folding or tucking.
The swishy fabric isn't the coziest to sit on; it’s a little slippery and cooling, like an outdoor camping blanket, but it gets the job done, especially when you’re choosing between your couch and your child’s juice box.
After a few rounds in the washer and dryer, it’s still performing well. A few stitches have started to loosen, but nothing that affects function. Best of all, it’s so inexpensive that replacing it down the line won’t sting—you can even grab a second one for your bedroom. It's entirely waterproof, too, thanks to four layers of fabric, water-resistant microfiber layers, and a waterproof coating.
Sizes: Recliner, loveseat, sofa, bed | Material: Microfiber | Care: Machine-wash in cold water, tumble-dry on low
The fabric is water resistant, so spills are easy to deal with, and it stands up to cat claws.
The textured grid pattern makes it obvious when the cover isn’t aligned.
Finding a good couch cover for a sectional is like finding a fitted sheet that actually fits your mattress: a bit impossible. This one comes pretty close, though. We tested it on a Burrow Block Nomad sofa with two feline roommates (including a long-haired Maine coon mix) who like to scratch furniture. This cover withstood those paws and claws.
As with the other couch covers on this list, we had to adjust this one, but it still proved durable and, best of all, water resistant. The fabric is a soft microfiber, which feels very pleasant to the touch, and liquid beads up instead of absorbing; when we spilled water on the cover, we wiped it away easily.
After three months, the fabric hasn’t lost its shape, texture, or water-repelling powers, even after a machine wash, and the elastic has kept its strong grip. That said, the textured grid pattern is not our favorite, as it makes it a lot more noticeable when the cover shifts.
Sizes: 2-seater and chaise, 2-seater backrest and chaise backrest, 3-seater and chaise, 3-seater backrest and chaise backrest, 3-back cushion, 2-seater, and chaise, 4-back cushion, 3-seater and chaise | Material: Polyester, spandex | Care: Machine-washable in cold water, tumble-dry on low| Colors: 22
These covers provide a tight fit to make your couch look as if it's been reupholstered.
It takes longer to install, and the material attracts pet hair.
The Ulticor L-Shape Recliner Covers can fit a variety of reclining couch shapes, with each piece wrapping individually around the couch sections, compared with just one big cover like our best overall. Plus, since it comes with 7 pieces, that's about $14 a cover, so you don't have to spend a fortune on custom slipcovers.
A stretchy, soft velvet, wraps your reclining sofa and the elastic keeps it in place. With any couch cover on a recliner, you should make sure the cover moves with the couch, so you're not re-arranging it with every recline.

With its ultra-stretchy fabric, easy maintenance, comfortable feel, and ability to survive an active household with two children and a 50-pound dog, the PrinceDeco Stretch Sofa Slipcover is our top pick for the best couch cover. For a budget-friendly option, we like the Easy-Going Stretch Sofa Slipcover for its super soft, cozy fabric, impressive durability, and ability to withstand two kids and a scratch-happy cat.

Our team tested couch covers at home and looked for testers with pets or kids, so we could easily see how durable these covers are. We've tested them for at least three months and will update this story with new findings after testing for six months.
Our testers:
Couch covers come in many shapes and sizes and will work on loveseats, three-seaters, sectionals, armchairs, and recliners. Getting the right fit for your size couch will be the main thing to worry about, so make sure you measure your couch exactly.
Almost all of the couch covers we tested are polyester, which we love since it's machine-washable. We also looked for ones with some stretch—normally you'll see a mix of polyester and elastane or spandex listed on the tag. The stretch helps you get the couch cover on and off when you want to wash it.
If you have pets, you need to look for a cover with a waterproof backing, like our best for spills pick.
While we also tested some couch covers that are made from velvet, microfiber, and cotton, only a couple made the list. And there are couch covers made from chenille, linen, faux and real leather, too—they don't stand up as well to pets, show wear and tear faster than our other options, and might be prone to snags, too.
While all of our picks are machine washable, if you buy something else, you should always check the label—especially if it has a waterproof or water-resistant backing to protect from spills or pets.
